Altyn-Emel National Park
Altyn-Emel is widely celebrated as one of Kazakhstan’s preeminent national parks, renowned for its striking variety of landscapes, remarkable biodiversity, and enduring cultural heritage. Dunes, open steppe, mountain forests of deciduous trees and spruce, and alpine meadows stretch within the park’s boundaries, sheltering endangered mammals, hundreds of bird species, and more than 1,800 species of plants.
Beyond its natural wonders, Altyn-Emel protects a wealth of archaeological and cultural sites, including ancient burial grounds and standing stones. In an early 2025 ranking, Altyn-Emel secured a place in the world’s top 10 national parks outside the United States, a testament to the park’s rich biodiversity, conservation achievements, varied terrain, and cultural heritage.
